Plain-English summary: Your journal lives on your phone, not our servers. We don't make you
create an account, we don't ask for your name, and we don't sell or share your personal data.
We use your location only to find bars near you, and we collect anonymous, aggregate usage
stats to improve the app. That's it.
1. Who we are
Barfly Diners is a private, local-first dining journal: you keep the bars and restaurants you love,
remember who to ask for and what to order, and log your visits. This policy explains what data the
app handles and how.
2. The data that stays on your device (we never receive it)
Everything you put into your journal is stored only on your device (in your browser/app storage):
- The places you save, your status for each (Love / On List / Pass)
- Your notes (staff, food & drink, who you met, general notes)
- Your visits and visit notes
- Photos you add to a place
- App settings (theme, etc.)
We do not have a copy of any of this. No account is created, and nothing about your journal is
uploaded to us. If you create a backup file (Settings → Back up), that file is saved wherever
you choose (Files, iCloud, email) — we never receive it.
3. Location
When you tap "Bars near me" or "I'm here now," the app uses your device location only to find
nearby places. Your coordinates are sent to our backend service, which queries place providers
(see §5) and returns results. We do not store your location — it's used to answer that one
request and discarded. You can also search by a city/ZIP you type, or by place name, without
sharing your device location.
4. Anonymous usage analytics
To understand how the app is used and improve it, we collect anonymous, aggregate usage
signals — for example, that the app was opened, a place was added, or a status was set. These
signals:
- contain no name, email, account, or device identifier that identifies you;
- are counted in aggregate and are not used to build a profile of you;
- never include your notes, photos, or the contents of your journal.
If and when venue-interest features are added (e.g. how many people have a given public venue on
their list), those counts are likewise anonymous and aggregate — tied to the public place, not
to you, and kept separate from any device signal so they can't be combined into a profile.
5. Place data providers (third parties)
The app fetches place information through our backend service from:
- Google Places — bar/restaurant listings for "bars near me." (Google's terms and privacy
policy apply to their data: https://policies.google.com/privacy)
- OpenStreetMap (Photon / Nominatim) — place name search and city/ZIP lookup.
(© OpenStreetMap contributors)
These providers receive only what's needed to answer a search (e.g. a coordinate or a query
string). We do not send them anything from your journal.
6. What we do NOT do
- We do not sell or rent your personal data.
- We do not show ads or use advertising trackers.
- We do not track you across other apps or websites.
- We do not require an account or collect your name, email, or contacts.
7. Notifications (when available)
A future version may let venues you've Loved or added to your List send you their deals or
events. This is designed to be anonymous: the venue can reach people who favorited it **without
knowing who you are, and you can mute** any place's notifications individually, or turn
notifications off entirely.
8. Your choices & deleting your data
Because your journal lives on your device:
- Delete everything: use Settings → Delete all my data, or simply uninstall the app — your
journal is gone, because there was no server copy.
- Move it: export a backup and restore it on another device.
- Location: you can deny or revoke the location permission in your device settings at any time;
search-by-name and search-by-city still work.
9. Children
Barfly Diners is an alcohol-related app intended for adults of legal drinking age. It is **not
directed to children** and carries a 17+ store age rating. Do not use the app if you are under the
legal drinking age in your location.
10. Security
Requests between the app and our backend use encrypted connections (HTTPS). Because your journal
stays on your device, its security also depends on your device's own protections (passcode,
encryption).
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the app evolves. Material changes will be reflected here with a new
effective date.
